Dr. Leonard Sax is from Pennsylvania and is a well-known speaker and author. He founded the Montgomery Center for Research in Child & Adolescent Development. In 2008, he left medical practice to devote himself to “learn as much as I can about gender in child and adolescent development.” He has spoken on issues of child and adolescent development, not only in the US but also in Australia, Bermuda, Canada, England, Germany, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, and Spain. Keynote: Girls on the Edge “Facebook Ate My Daughter”
The keynote address will discuss:
• How the emerging world of social networking is putting girls in a new kind of jeopardy
• What are the effects of social media such as Facebook, YouTube and 24/7 texting
• What evidence suggests that this media may be more toxic for girls than for boys
• What professionals need to know to identify & intervene effectively with girls at risk
• Why are so many girls suffering from “anorexia of the soul”
Breakout: Boys Adrift
Learning objectives:
• Why do so many boys today think school is a waste of time
• Why boys are less motivated to achieve in school
• The growing influence of video games
• What are some strategies other communities use to re-engage boys and young men to become productive, courteous and responsible
Breakout: Why Gender Matters
Dr. Sax will share gender-specific strategies that have been used by juvenile justice professionals across the US to better understand and work with girls and boys at risk.

Jim Holler is from Pennsylvania where he served as the Chief of Police for 16 years. In Chief Holler’s 35 years of law enforcement and public safety service he has seen firsthand the failures and successes of child exploitation investigations. He knows, and will demonstrate that the wellbeing of a child victim depends on the actions adults and professionals are willing to take. Chief Holler is known for his appeal to a wide variety of audiences by delivering serious, result-driven information with professionally polished humor. Breakout: Social Worker’s: “Making a Case for Safety”
Each day thousands of social workers make home visits in the US and during these visits they investigate allegations of abuse and sexual assault, update safety plans for children, and monitor on-going foster care. Social workers spend countless hours behind the scenes assisting those in need. At times social workers may be forced to deal with individuals who become angry and attempt to take their aggression out on them.
Learning objectives:
• Identify strengths by learning to listen more attentively
• Recognize the breaking point of family members during visits
• Recognize potentially dangerous situations
• Recognize and demonstrate how to safely defuse a volatile situation
• Understand what simple techniques can be used to defend yourself if necessary
Tom Kidd is from Osseo, WI. After 32 years as a Health Educator in the Osseo-Fairchild, Fall Creek and Eau Claire school systems Tom has retired. Tom is the founder of Life Enhancement Services. He presently facilitates trainings, consults and speaks to a variety of audiences on over 100 different health-related topics. He is a motivating, interesting and informative speaker. Tom’s presentation is designed specifically for the direct service provider. The importance of building self-esteem or service providers will be addressed.

This presentation is designed specifically for the direct service provider, and emphasizes the importance of building our own self-esteem. It will also focus on knowing what our strengths are and how we can use these strengths to help us in our daily work.
